Nonna rana rental details
Welcome to a land of green woods, fields of wheat and sunflowers, poppies, silvery olive groves, blue skies and gentle, rolling hills; a place scented by freshly mown hay, flowers and ripe fruit, flavoured with the tang of Umbrian olive oil and the mouth-filling richness of our local wines. A place of bells at midday, cock-crow at dawn and the chirping of cicadas during the hot summer days.
It's a tranquil and secluded place, but not remote or isolated.
Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, is less than 10 km away. Its atmosphere of peace and spirituality extends to our place also. Here St. Francis made his sermon to the birds exactly in the place where now an altar stands in the shade of trees at Piandarca. Giotto illustrated this event in a famous fresco to be seen in the Upper Basilica of Assisi.
The house was converted from an old granary, hay-loft and hut which were in danger of falling into ruins, and rebuilt in the style of a traditional farmhouse, with an outside flight of steps and a balcony, painted in the typical yellow of the Umbrian countryside.
It offers accommodation in six delightful self-catering apartments.
The house is simple but comfortable, suitable for those seeking authenticity at affordable prices; ideal for those who think, as we do, that the values and pleasures of life are connected with open spaces, quiet, time, unspoiled nature.
At Nonna Rana you will find the comfort, freedom and privacy of your home, but you will also discover enchanting new places, customs, traditions, foods and scenery.
There is a swimming pool, a green area with barbecue, tables and chairs and a children's playground.
Children are our favourite guests.
We devote all our care and love to them. They will have a friend to play with: our son Richard, 12 years old.
There are walks over paths, fields and woods. A few minutes' drive away you can practise your favourite sports (tennis, horse riding, golf, fishing, clay-pigeon shooting).
During your stay, you can sample the olive oil of our land, the vegetables of our garden, the fruits of our orchard and discover the ancient tastes of our farming tradition (home-made pasta, torta al testo - a flatbread -). You can be showed how to prepare those simple foods, a habit for us, an agreeable discovery for you.
You will be free to plan your day without haste, go out in the morning to explore the natural and artistic beauties of our land, returning at night to relax in your apartment.

Attractions available near the Nonna rana
The nearest centre, Cannara, has ancient origins. Its name comes from the reed (canna in Italian) which was abundant in that marshy land.
We suggest you visit the townhall to see the Roman remains, the church of St. Biagio which dates back to twelve century with its beautiful Romanesque front and Gothic vault, the church of St. Francis with a painting by Nicoḷ Alunno and the church of Bona Mortem where, according to tradition, St. Francis founded the Third Order.
The Corpus Christi floral decorations are the chef-d'oeuvre of Cannara's artistic creativeness. The people of Cannara make carpets of fresh and dried flowers representing religious or secular themes or ornamental motifs along the streets of the city. People come from far and wide to see them.

The hamlet of Collemancio seats on a hilltop and has only one hundred inhabitants. It's a picturesque village surrounded by walls and towers in a good state of preservation. On the hill you can see the ruins of the ancient Roman municipium of Urbinum Hortense.

Assisi is 10 km away. We suggest you visit the Basilica of St. Francis decorated by the greatest painters of the 13th and 14th centuries: Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Piero Lorenzetti, the Cathedral of St. Rufino where St. Francis was baptized, with its Romanesque facade dating from the 16th century , the Hermitage where St. Francis retired to pray and meditate.

Spello is a little town of Roman origin not far from our house. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore (XIIIth century) displays some of Pinturicchio's famous frescoes.
Park your car, take care to wear comfortable shoes and explore the well-preserved lanes of Spello. Spello is as famous as Cannara or even more for its floral decorations.Montefalco rises on the top of a hill surrounded by a beautiful countryside and vineyards which produce excellent wines.
Wine is very cheap here, often less than you pay for mineral water in your country.
There are also an amazing number of excellent restaurants in the area, at prices less than half what you would pay in England or America.
Five minutes' drive away is Bevagna, the ancient Roman Mevania, rich in historic remains. Do not miss the fair of the "Gaite", a faithful re-creation of daily life in the Middle Ages along the evocative lanes and corners of the four wards of the town.
Deruta is world famous for its ceramic art which dates back to the Middle Ages and still represents the main activity of the town. Crowds of majolica shoppers visit all the year round Deruta.

Bettona was funded by the Etruscans. The well preserved Etruscan city walls stand in many parts of the town. Not to loose a visit to the local pictures gallery (Pinacoteca Comunale) which keeps some paintings of Perugino and Dono Doni.

Torgiano stands in a fertile territory crossed by river Chiascio and River Tevere which produces high quality wines appreciated all over the world.
The millennial story of wine can be learnt by visiting the "Museum of wine".
